PULIKURUMBA: A sleepy village in the remote area of Kannur, Pulikurumba has not much to claim or boast of its past glory. Truly, it is a developing location in terms of physical and social amenities. If we look into its old face, one can trace the hardships of the settler families in the region.
Most of the inhabitants are people from the South and Central part of Kerala. Kottayam people however dominate the region. Education witnessed a boom in the area with the opening of St. Joseph’s L.P. School. Changes started in the region with the consecration of the St. Augustin’s Church. Later on, Upper Primary and High School came up in the region catering to a huge chunk of the rural population.
Earlier, people in the region were destined to depend on nearby schools in Naduvil, Chemperi, Sreekandapuram and Thaliparamba. Electricity, road facilities and communication facilities witnessed a development very late in the 1970s. The changemakers were mainly the parish priests who came to the region from Thalassery Arch diocese. The Sacred heart sisters who worked in hand with the priests to spiritually and morally guide the natives.
People from all religion live in harmony here. Though a mosque is yet to come to the region, there are plenty of temples here. Tourism is also on the track of development with the adjoining Paithalmala hills. it is only 15 kilometres away from Pulikurumba.
The small pockets of Pulikurumba include ‘Venkunnu Kavala, Thondan Mukku, Pulikurumba Palli, Balu kada, Pulikurumba Town, Kariya Mukku, Nariyanmavu and Kaithalam. The land is also proud of its children who are now doing their jobs in different part of the world and in different fields including medicine, engineering, media and education. proud to be a “Puli” kurumban…!!!
